Colorado Drivers are 8th Worst Drivers in the Nation

Colorado flag waving on the wind | Colorado Drivers are 8th Worst Drivers in Nation

Coloradans have a lot to brag about- just maybe not their driving prowess, according to QuoteWizard, a Seattle-based insurance comparison website with offices in Denver.

The company looked at total accidents, fatal crashes, speeding tickets, DUI and other traffic citations to determine the rankings.

Colorado ranked 11th worst for DUIs, 10th worst for number of speeding tickets, and number one for overall driving citations, including non-use of seat belts, failure to use a signal, and running red lights. Averaged together, all those infractions make Coloradans the 8th worst drivers in the nation.

The remainder of the ten worst states to drive in looks like this:

  1. Arizona
  2. Washington
  3. Colorado
  4. North Dakota
  5. South Carolina
  6. Nebraska
  7. Maine
  8. Virginia
  9. California
  10. Utah

If you’re wondering where some of the safer places to drive might be, head to Nevada, Michigan, Mississippi, Florida, or Rhode Island. Those states rounded out the top 5 best driving states.

However, any place can be dangerous to drive if you don’t take some precautions.

Traffic accidents in the U.S. claimed approximately 38,000 lives in 2015, and injured an additional 4.4 million people. The type and number of car accident varies greatly from state to state depending on population and other factors.

In 2015, there were 506 fatal car accidents in Colorado that claimed 546 lives. The majority of those were passenger vehicles, followed closely by motorcycles. Over one-quarter of the drivers killed in Colorado had blood alcohol levels that exceeded the legal limit and over half were not wearing their seat belt, leading one to believe there is much room for improvement when it comes to personal safety behind the wheel.
