Does Motorcycle Safety Gear Actually Prevent Injuries?

motorcyclist-in-motorcycle-safety-gear-smAccording to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, motorcyclist deaths occur more than 27x more frequently than other vehicle fatalities. In 2015 alone, 4,976 motorcyclists were killed, representing an 8% increase from 2014. In addition, an estimated 88,000 motorcyclists were injured. Because motorcycles offer little protection to their riders, safety experts urge motorcyclists of all ages to wear appropriate safety gear in order to prevent injuries. But does motorcycle safety gear actually prevent injuries?

Motorcycle Helmets Prevent Brain Injury

By and large the single most important piece of safety gear a motorcyclist can wear is a helmet. According to the NHTSA, motorcyclists without helmets are 40% more likely to die from a traumatic brain injury. In 2008 alone, motorcycle helmets save the lives of more than 1,800 motorcyclists. When choosing a motorcycle helmet, it is important to consider helmet safety ratings. DOT approved means that it meets the Department of Transportation’s minimum standard level of protection. Your helmet should be the proper fit and should be appropriate for the type of bike you are riding. In general, full face helmets offer elite all around protection and are the safest choice for most riders.

Sturdy Boots Protect from Foot Injuries

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) found that leg and foot injuries were the most common type of injuries suffered by motorcycle accident victims. In fact, 30% of all motorcycle accident victims suffered from a leg or foot injury. In order to prevent some of these injuries from occurring, motorcyclists are encouraged to wear heavy duty biking pants and sturdy boots when riding. Body armor can also be worn as an additional layer of protection underneath your riding clothes. Motorcycle boots can protect your feet and ankles from crushing injuries and fractures.

Motorcycle Goggles Prevent Eye Injuries

Riding in the wind and on the road can cause horrible eye injuries if a piece of debris flies into your face. Eye goggles are a great way to protect your eyes from the elements and from any dust and road debris. A helmet with a full face shield is another great way to prevent eye injuries from occurring. Without eye protection, riders could get serious corneal abrasions or other devastating eye injuries.

Motorcycle Jackets Prevent Road Rash

When a motorcyclist is thrown from their bike, they can slide across the pavement causing serous road rash. Road rash is a deep abrasion to the skin that can cause permanent disfigurement. Good quality motorcycle jackets, pants, and suits can prevent severe abrasions and disfigurement from occurring. Materials such as Cordura 1000D and Gore-Tex, as well as leather, can protect your skin, while also protecting you from the harsh weather.
