The message is clear: it’s time to put the phone down. According to the CDOT, distracted drivers are the cause of 43 crashes a day across the state, and last year there were more than 15,600 distracted driving crashes in Colorado, causing 6,269 injuries and 53 fatalities. In order to reduce distracted driving, the CDOT has launched its “Get Turned On” campaign as part of National Distracted Driving Awareness Month. This campaign urges drivers to put their phones down and use some of the latest cell phone technology to reduce distracted driving.
Drivers can help avoid the temptation to check their phone while driving by putting it into airplane mode when they get behind the wheel, or adopting an “out of sight, out of mind” approach by tucking the phone somewhere that is out of arm’s reach, like in the glove box, in the back seat, or in the trunk of the car. The CDOT is also recommending the use of “Do Not Disturb While Driving” modes that are available on Android and Apple devices. There are also many different third party apps available to help limit cell phone use while driving. Apps such as LifeSaver, SafeDrive, and DriveMode have features and settings that drivers of all ages may find helpful for themselves.
A CDOT survey revealed that 90% of all drivers reported distracted driving in the last week alone.
While these apps can curb the use of cellphones while driving, they don’t reduce all forms of distracted driving. Eating and drinking, playing with the radio, fiddling with your GPS device, or reading a map can all be big distractions when driving. Drivers need to be aware of the habits they form behind the wheel of the car and how these habits may be increasing their risk of getting into a serious car accident.
