Halloween Traffic Safety

Halloween is one of the most popular holidays in the United States, loved and celebrated by millions. But, it’s also one of the most dangerous holidays.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, a total of 158 people died in DUI related crashes during Halloween nights for the years 2013 thru 2017. Almost half of the people killed in traffic collisions for that same period of time were in accidents where at least one driver involved was intoxicated.

But it’s not just drivers who get injured on Halloween, their passengers and innocent pedestrians are also injured and killed. On Halloween 2017 alone, three pedestrians and 11 passengers were killed in DUI collisions across the U.S.

Of course, drunk driving is a year round problem, and not just of concern on Halloween. But, a study conducted by AutoInsurance.org shows that there is a definite increase in these types of accidents on Halloween, which is not surprising considering that many people celebrate the holiday by going out and drinking.

To combat these disturbing and unnecessary fatalities, the NHTSA has launched it’s “Buzzed Driving is Drunk Driving” campaign, the goal of which is to encourage drivers to stay sober behind the wheel, motivate them arrange for alternative means of transportation if they will be drinking, and also educate citizens on just how dangerous Halloween can be for DUI accidents.

The NHTSA has teamed up with local law enforcement and other agencies to help them use social media to spread awareness about the dangers of drunk driving on Halloween, by providing content designed to capture people’s attention and help increase their awareness around the issue.

So this Halloween, however you’re planning on celebrating, please make sure you do so responsibly, and don’t drink and drive. 2020 has been scary enough without any Halloween DUI car accidents.
